What I read and knitted while away

I talked about our bushwalking trip yesterday. One of the great joys of the trip was that there  was lots of time for reading and knitting and amazing places to do so. The walking days were not long, generally 5 - 6 hours and every afternoon was full of sunshine. Then it got dark and cold at 6 and we would retire to the tent around 7.30 and read until I couldn't keep my eyes open, which was usually only about an hour or two. 

For our three nights in hall's Gap we had wonderful chairs to sit in, kangaroos to watch and birds to listen to in the perfect reading spot. That was my reading view.

Before we left I posted that I was going to knit Bright Axis, a simple tee, while we were away. I thought it would be loads of knitting. It was the perfect project - simple, engaging and pretty. I finished the knitting portion in the car on the way home, and Leon and my parents had to endure three hours of me not having any knitting to do. Now I just have to sew up the shoulders and it is finished.


So, what did I read during this time?

I finished A Darker Shade of Magic by V E Shwab, which was ... fine. I think It's young adult, and it just seemed very black and white. The good is good and the bad is bad and it all seemed a bit simple. Not bad, just basic.


Then I read Kate Atkinson's Transcription, which I had been saving up for a holiday. This World War Two Book follows an 18 year old during the war, with a post war timeline as well. it's compelling, interesting and a fun read.

After that I (foolishly) went into another YA fantasy, Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. The plot made no sense to me - why would the king be making criminals compete to be his Champion? Why is everyone described in a really physical way? This book just throws everything at us - bad kings, good looking princes, plucky young women - everything. I DNFd at 37 percent, when I was about to climb into bed to read and realised I just was not wanting to.

While we were in Hall's Gap (look at that spot to sit and read!) I also started a NetGalley copy of Recipe another instalment in the Object Lessons series. This one is pretty good, although remarkably American-centric.

At the failure of Throne of Glass I stated Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett. It's another fantasy novel with a young woman on a quest as the protagonist, but this one actually held my interest, for the rest of the trip and beyond.

    I haven't been to Halls Gap for years!! I was thinking about where our next Victorian road trip might be. Maybe I should consider there!

    Looks like a great trip! I read Throne of Glass and others in the series but don't remember a thing or have any plans for a reread. It is seeming too YA for me these days. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

    Wow! What a nice, relaxing week! I did more reading than usual on vacation last week because I got sick towards the end and was spending more time in the cabin. Glad you stayed healthy--outdoorsy trips are the way to do that, I guess! I liked A Darker Shade of Magic more than you did, but I'm a sucker for that kind of book. I love Kate Atkinson, and you've reminded me that I never read Transcription!

Why Andrea Mowry, why? (A rant and a rather nice finished object)

As mentioned, prior to our hiking trip I suddenly, and rather randomly, decided to knit  Andrea Morwy's Traveler Shell . It's basically an open fronted rectangle in a knit purl pattern. The pattern is FOURTEEN pages long. Why is the pattern 14 pages long? Because, instead of explaining the ten row repeat and then putting the shaping on top of that (e.g. decrease while continuing to knit in pattern), she writes out the entire ten row knit purl sequence every time something changes. Additionally, most of the time she starts with even number being the right side and wrong numbers being the right side,which is just plain odd. It's confusing and it's like she wants to keep you looking at the pattern for every row, rathe than following the very intuitive stitch pattern, which I had memorised after one repeat.  The instructions for the band just say 'pick up x number of stitches'. No ratios, no acjnowledgement that different bits of the band have different ratios. Afte...

Slowly slowly

I haven’t posted about my actual knitting for a while. This might be because not much has changed since the last time I talked about my knitting. This is the edging of my Village Sweater Wrap:  The picture fails to capture how much further there is to go. I'm just past the first arm hole, so just over a third of the way through. It’s 47 stitches of relatively simple lace. I’ve been knitting it since Monday two weeks ago. It’s quite pleasant, and slowly growing but I can’t quite work out why it’s growing so slowly. One reason I know is that the first week I was knitting it during Good Beer Week, so I didn’t take it out and about with me. I knit other things, and when I’m knitting two things it makes everything feel like it takes forever. But the main reason, I think, is that this is just a slow knit for me. I love the needles I’m knitting on ( Karbonz of course) I love the yarn, I love the way the lace looks. So really, what’s the rush? I’m not going to be cold...

Linky Wednesday - the one with the pause

In meditation it's said that the pause between the in breath and the out breath is a gap, a space to rest. Well, I'm in that in-between space for reading, listening and knitting. This is a random photo of a highlight of my week - I filled up my lolly jar. These are just supermarket party mix. During the lockdowns, we sources a great pick-and-mix delivery service, but at some point they started sending from the UK, which is a bit silly. Rachey messaged me a new one she found, and I impulsed purchased a kilo of mixed lollies, and then she sent me a link to the biggest lolly shop in Melbourne, which also delivers sweets by the kilogram, so i think I'm sorted for the rest of the year!  In reading I've just finished  The Beckoning Lady   by Margery Allingham . It's the second last book in the Summer of Mystery, and I have to admit, having now read nine Margery Allingham books, that they are OK.
