Unravelled Wednesday - the one where I am still not sticking to any plan

 So, I did DNF  The Emergency, because I hated it. It was kind of wooden, and not very interesting. I got Scary Monsters by Michelle de Kretser from the library and started it. It's a book in two parts which can be read in either order - I remember when it was originally published the paper copies had one part starting on one side of the book - or turn it over and the other part starts from the other side of the book. The first half was very good - I am going through a bit of literary fiction by women stage. Anyway, just before we went away I found out that Empire of the Dawn the final volume of Jay Kristoff's Empire of the Vampire series has come out that very day. Unusually for me, at the end of part one of Scary Monsters I set it aside and starting this amazing 800 page epic finale to this brilliant series. I am loving it - vampires, quests, endless dark, battles, love and so many emotions!


After I finish this I'll go back to Scary Monsters (presuming my library loan hasn't run out).

In knitting I'm also drifting about a bit. On Monday night I finished my father's socks. Tuesday was trivia night, so I  cast on a quick charity baby hat.
I didn't want to establish and start knitting the colourwork for my next project Backlit by Stephanie Lotven, at the pub! I am really looking forward to starting that, which I am going to do in this pretty yarn, pretty much as soon as finish writing this. 

I'm also still knitting Joji's mystery shawl. Each clue is taking much of my weekend knitting, but it is very relaxing and enjoyable and purple. Click here for my Ravelry project, including spoilers.

    I have Scary Monsters on my bookcase, the version with one story at the back and one at the front. I'm going through a bit of a literary fiction journey at the moment too, which isn't like me at all. Guess I'm looking for some deeper reading than usual.

    I must have missed the release of Scary Monsters somehow, Kristoff’s series is still on my TBR even though I have the first two books.

    Knock on wood, but I haven't DNF'd a book for a while. I haven't read that series by Jay Kristoff. It does sound good. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

Unravelled wednesday and WAYRN - the one where I prepare

We are heading off for some camping and hiking and general R&R on Friday, so I'm currently in planning and preparing mode. Of course that mainly means deciding what to knit - I'm going to make the Old Romance cardigan by Joji Locatelli. The yarn is wound and I'm ready to go. I completed Leon's Winter Set (2023) just in time, and it's currently blocking. I'm reading Georgette Hayer's Fredrica , which I am enjoying very much. Yarnalong - the one with the final bit of transport

Remember how I took every form of transport known to man a fortnight ago? Well, I was missing just one thing, suburban trains. But today I got to remedy that, knitting my way to Dandenong for work. Yay? My Char jumper has been knitting up ridiculously fast. It's easy, pleasant and a well written pattern. I'm reading Rachael Herron's latest book The Ones Who Matter Most . It's a good read so far, family centered fiction, easy to read but still emotionally challenging. I'm listening to Evelyn Waugh's Men At Arms . I'm enjoying it, I didn't really know what to expect, but some of it reminds me of Catch 22, in that it catalogues the absurdities of war and bureaucracy. The narrator has the perfect upper crust English accent and I'm very pleased it's the first of a trilogy.   And that's another week of reading, knitting and catching trains everywhere for me. Why Andrea Mowry, why? (A rant and a rather nice finished object)

As mentioned, prior to our hiking trip I suddenly, and rather randomly, decided to knit  Andrea Morwy's Traveler Shell . It's basically an open fronted rectangle in a knit purl pattern. The pattern is FOURTEEN pages long. Why is the pattern 14 pages long? Because, instead of explaining the ten row repeat and then putting the shaping on top of that (e.g. decrease while continuing to knit in pattern), she writes out the entire ten row knit purl sequence every time something changes. Additionally, most of the time she starts with even number being the right side and wrong numbers being the right side,which is just plain odd. It's confusing and it's like she wants to keep you looking at the pattern for every row, rathe than following the very intuitive stitch pattern, which I had memorised after one repeat.  The instructions for the band just say 'pick up x number of stitches'. No ratios, no acjnowledgement that different bits of the band have different ratios. Afte...
