Linky Wednesday - the one with the troublesome library

About three months ago I moved from Kindle to Kobo, partly so I could use the public library (no Kindle with libraries, it's an Australian thing). And it's been the weirdest time. Books appearing, books saying they are expiring the next day, but still working, emails saying my books are available which Overdrive on my device saying they are not. Still I've read some really great books from the library, and they are free. I am currently reading Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas, #1) by Dean Koontz. Apparently it expires in three days, so I don't know if it will just disappear. After that I'm hoping to read the next Maisie Dobbs, but the library says I can have it in two days - and last time I tried this, after the countdown got to 1 day, it just said 'soon' for a week. It's very odd, and also a low stakes adventure.

In audio I'm listening to Pachinko  which everyone was reading a couple of years ago. I mainly started it because it was free on audible, and I am enjoying having this story read to me.

In knitting I'm up to the shoulders of Leon's jumper. So close to done:

But I have been rather more focussed on my overly complicated sock. I'm down to (up to?) the heel on the second sock. Slow, but it is a very dramatic sock.

To read my all my book reviews, and to see everything I knit, you can find me on Ravelry as Sharondoubleknit and on GoodReads as Sharondblk

I'm joining in with Kat from As Kat Knits for Unravelled Wednesday and Kat from the Bookdate for It's Monday, What Are You Reading.  This week I'm also linking up with Sam from Taking on a World of Words for WWW Wednesday where we talk about what we are currently reading, what we have just finished and what we are going to read next.

  1. Pretty sure I have Pachinko - unread - on my Kindle, although perhaps this is not quite the time to mention it given your struggles with the library app!

  2. Wow it's sounds like a confusing time for electric reading. I just downloaded the Libby app that the library uses and it has worked. Although over COVID Lockdown my account started playing up because apparently every two years you have to renew your card 🙄

Have a great week and good luck with that complicated looking sock.

  3. Other than on CD, I haven't borrowed audiobooks from the library for that reason. I just don't understand it or see it as reliable enough.

Your making some lovely things. How long does it take to make socks?

Hope you enjoy your books this week.

    1. It depends. These socks took a month, but I could only knit them when concentrating. Normally a week or so.

  4. Our local library system uses Libby but the catalogue is very small, mostly limited to popular authors and best sellers so I rarely think to use it.

Wishing you a happy reading week

  5. Those socks are just gorgeous! The pattern is almost too impressive to be hidden in shoes and under pants!
When I went to look up Pachinko, I discovered that it is still popular. My library has a 117 day wait for it!

  6. I don't borrow e-books or audio books from the library for this exact reason!

It would be good to be able to but still I get by!

    Have a great week!

  7. I use Borrowbox from my library for most of my audiobooks, sometimes Libby if they don't have it. Our library also has Hoopla and I joined a different library to use Cloudlibrary. I'm in WA but I imagine eastern states would have the same, or not. Enjoy the books you get out :-)

Geogradiant MKAL Part 1 - that was unexpected (spoilers)

Stephen West released the first MKAL clue on Thursday night. I started knitting it without looking at spoilers. When I got up on Friday he had sent through an "alternative" clue one. I then went and had a look at the spoiler thread to try to work out what was going on. Which was that some people thought the pattern looked like a "German hate symbol". I knit on anyway, since I was half-way through. Then he took down the original clue, replacing it with a mitred square in garter stitch. The Ravelry forums and Instagram are a complete shit-show, even though Rav is being moderated. It's been a bit disheartening, having something that is usually quite light and fun weighed down with all this. I admire Stephen's quick and sensitive response to this drama. I also feel that anything can look like anything if you squint. To me this looks like a Celtic knot. I think mine is pretty, and I'll knit on through all crises.

Linky Wednesday - the one with the pause

In meditation it's said that the pause between the in breath and the out breath is a gap, a space to rest. Well, I'm in that in-between space for reading, listening and knitting. This is a random photo of a highlight of my week - I filled up my lolly jar. These are just supermarket party mix. During the lockdowns, we sources a great pick-and-mix delivery service, but at some point they started sending from the UK, which is a bit silly. Rachey messaged me a new one she found, and I impulsed purchased a kilo of mixed lollies, and then she sent me a link to the biggest lolly shop in Melbourne, which also delivers sweets by the kilogram, so i think I'm sorted for the rest of the year!  In reading I've just finished  The Beckoning Lady   by Margery Allingham . It's the second last book in the Summer of Mystery, and I have to admit, having now read nine Margery Allingham books, that they are OK. I wouldn't have read them if they were not connected to this club, but on...

Linky Wednesday - 3/2024

It's been a bit of a week. Because of my hand , I can't really knit, so I'm doing some charity crocheting:  It's quite fun, but also I'm halfway through a shrug for myself, and I'd rather be knitting. Oh well, we can't always get what we want! In reading, I'm reading Stargazy Pie , the next Victoria Goddard. This is a comedy of manners and  lots of things happen. I can't say I feel deeply  about any of them, but that's not the point. It's fun.   I'm listening to Elin Hilderbrand's The Five-Star Weekend . It's got a lot of characters, and it took me while to get into it, but now I'm invested. Women's fiction at it's finest. Next up is a review book Tidelines by Sarah Sasson. Great cover. It's Australian, and you know how I love a local book (although I think it's set, or at least starts in Sydney). It's described as a coming of age  novel, and I love those too, so it sounds like a winner.  I just re-read t...
