Linky Wednesday - the one with the trouble with the formatting

Last week I said I was going to read The Close-Up by Pip Drysdale, but I had some issues with the formatting (sometimes NetGalley gives books as PDFs rather than ePubs, which sucks, and I've only recently worked out how to check before requesting the book)  so I read Crescendo by Joanna Howat - also a NetGalley review book. It was quite good. Then I read Traitor by Krista D. Ball, the first of a space opera series. It was really fun, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Then I didn't know what to read next. I was a little lost. I'm still struggling to get The Close-Up into a readable format, and I tried to read the next Maisie Dobbs Birds of a Feather book from the library. I put a hold, and got an email saying it was ready, but when I went to get it is still a couple of days off. I'm still confused about the library!

So I picked a random romance off my e-Reader Love, Lies and Lavender by D.E. Malone. So far so good - it seems really sweet, which is what I'm in the mood for right now.

I might read The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez  next. Leon read it recently and is itching to talk about it.

In audio I finished Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, and moved to a very different kind of book - Madam a memoir of Antonia Murphy's time setting up and running a brothel in New Zealand. I'm enjoying it - although as with all memoirs there are times I wish the focus was on what I want it to be on, not what the author thinks it should be on. It's from NetGalley, they have really upped their audiobook game in the last year or so.

In knitting, as I mentioned yesterday I had a glorious amount of knitting time during our 4 day holiday. I finished the body of Leon's jumper:

Now I've got half a sleeve before I join the arms to the body.

Before we left I finished the first epic sock

I need to start the second one. It's quite nice having two projects, one simple and soothing and one more complex and challenging.

And here's a photo of some kangaroos from the weekend. I love the way Leon's jumper is basically kangaroo coloured.

To read my all my book reviews, and to see everything I knit, you can find me on Ravelry as Sharondoubleknit and on GoodReads as Sharondblk

I'm joining in with Kat from As Kat Knits for Unravelled Wednesday and Kat from the Bookdate for It's Monday, What Are You Reading.  This week I'm also linking up with Sam from Taking on a World of Words for WWW Wednesday where we talk about what we are currently reading, what we have just finished and what we are going to read next.

  1. I love the socks!

Sounds like you have had some adventures with your books! Some Netgalley books are hard to read. I have been able to read them all eventually šŸ˜‚

I hope that you get your library hold soon!

    Have a great week!

  2. I wish I could knit. I hate it when Netgalley only give a PDF, well it's the publisher who only supplies it and I always forget to check, I have a new one I forgot to check which means trying to read it on my phone or digging out my tablet which is too big to read in bed. I'll try to remember to check next time it's a publisher I'm not sure of. I have a Pip Drysdale book that is soooooo overdue to read at some point. Enjoy her new one. Happy reading. Here's my post if you want to check it out https://clairesreadsandreviews.home.blog/2024/11/11/its-monday-what-are-you-reading-19/

Linky Wednesday - the one with the pause

In meditation it's said that the pause between the in breath and the out breath is a gap, a space to rest. Well, I'm in that in-between space for reading, listening and knitting. This is a random photo of a highlight of my week - I filled up my lolly jar. These are just supermarket party mix. During the lockdowns, we sources a great pick-and-mix delivery service, but at some point they started sending from the UK, which is a bit silly. Rachey messaged me a new one she found, and I impulsed purchased a kilo of mixed lollies, and then she sent me a link to the biggest lolly shop in Melbourne, which also delivers sweets by the kilogram, so i think I'm sorted for the rest of the year!  In reading I've just finished  The Beckoning Lady   by Margery Allingham . It's the second last book in the Summer of Mystery, and I have to admit, having now read nine Margery Allingham books, that they are OK. I wouldn't have read them if they were not connected to this club, but on...

Geogradiant MKAL Part 1 - that was unexpected (spoilers)

Stephen West released the first MKAL clue on Thursday night. I started knitting it without looking at spoilers. When I got up on Friday he had sent through an "alternative" clue one. I then went and had a look at the spoiler thread to try to work out what was going on. Which was that some people thought the pattern looked like a "German hate symbol". I knit on anyway, since I was half-way through. Then he took down the original clue, replacing it with a mitred square in garter stitch. The Ravelry forums and Instagram are a complete shit-show, even though Rav is being moderated. It's been a bit disheartening, having something that is usually quite light and fun weighed down with all this. I admire Stephen's quick and sensitive response to this drama. I also feel that anything can look like anything if you squint. To me this looks like a Celtic knot. I think mine is pretty, and I'll knit on through all crises.

Linky Wednesday - welcome to sOctober

Happy sOctober to those who celebrate. This week's reading was a bit of a mixed bag.  I read a review copy of  The Day He Disappeared   by Catherine Miller , although I ended up skim reading it because it was a very tedious book. Poorly written, repetitious, predictable and boring. Now I'm reading  The End of the Playboy by Harlin Hailey  which is a sort of midlife crisis Hollywood satire. Or a reflection on aging and society, I'm not sure which. I am enjoying it though.  Then I've got two more review books, the Amazon Original short story  When We Were Friends by Jane Green    And  Bad Reputation by Emma Barry A romance that I requested purely on the basis of that cover! In audio I decided to finally try  Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke  because it's 34 hours long and I felt like I was getting through my credits too fast. I'm enjoying it - it feel like the sort of book that is better on audio. After I s...
