Linky Wednesday - the one where I let fate pick my next book

I said last week that I wasn't sure what I was going to read next. After I finished Him by Geoff Ryman (weird book, I'm still not sure what to make of it) I put my Kobo down. When I picked it up again it was displaying the cover of The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, one of the older books on my Kobo. So I decided to read that. It's quite a dense book - it's by the author of The Shadow of the Wind, a book I remember loving, but that I also read in about 2009 - and that's all I remember about it. It's a big book (600 pages) so next up might be a while! I'm enjoying this one and trying to be in the moment, rather than always rushing into the future. 

I've got a couple of NetGalley review books to read before the end of the month, so it will probably be them, The Worst Thing I've Ever Done by Clare Stephens  and Restitution by Tamar Shapiro. they both sound really good, so I'll prbably choose randomly!

In ear reading I'm close to finishing Vianne by Joanne Harris.  I've really enjoyed it, and will be following it up by listening Chocolat which it is a prequel to, but first I think I'll go for a change of pace an listen to Terra Incognita  by Ruth Downie which is the 2nd of a series of procedural who-dun-its set in Roman Britian.

In knitting I finished my grey cardigan.

I love it, and will be back later this week with more photos and all my thoughts.

I have just cast on a Ninilchik Swoncho for Kris. Does Kris want a Swancho? I guess so, since she chose the yarn for it, but mainly I want us all to wear matchy, matchy ridiculous knitwear. 

I'm going away to Queensland for the weekend, and I'm trying a new experiment - I don't want to carry a huge handbag, or a separate knitting bag, so I will be casting on a 4 ply (fingering) cardigan for my mother tonight - one skein of yarn fits perfectly in this pocket.

 I'll report back on operation 'carry a small handbag but fit everything in it'. The bag is the Micro Structured Tote by  Bon Maxie. I often carry their Small Tote, which is large enough to take a whole jumper project, but I'm trying to be cute this trip with the micro tote..

Unravelled wednesday and WAYRN - the one where I prepare

We are heading off for some camping and hiking and general R&R on Friday, so I'm currently in planning and preparing mode. Of course that mainly means deciding what to knit - I'm going to make the Old Romance cardigan by Joji Locatelli. The yarn is wound and I'm ready to go. I completed Leon's Winter Set (2023) just in time, and it's currently blocking. I'm reading Georgette Hayer's Fredrica , which I am enjoying very much. Yarnalong - the one with the final bit of transport

Remember how I took every form of transport known to man a fortnight ago? Well, I was missing just one thing, suburban trains. But today I got to remedy that, knitting my way to Dandenong for work. Yay? My Char jumper has been knitting up ridiculously fast. It's easy, pleasant and a well written pattern. I'm reading Rachael Herron's latest book The Ones Who Matter Most . It's a good read so far, family centered fiction, easy to read but still emotionally challenging. I'm listening to Evelyn Waugh's Men At Arms . I'm enjoying it, I didn't really know what to expect, but some of it reminds me of Catch 22, in that it catalogues the absurdities of war and bureaucracy. The narrator has the perfect upper crust English accent and I'm very pleased it's the first of a trilogy.   And that's another week of reading, knitting and catching trains everywhere for me. Why Andrea Mowry, why? (A rant and a rather nice finished object)

As mentioned, prior to our hiking trip I suddenly, and rather randomly, decided to knit  Andrea Morwy's Traveler Shell . It's basically an open fronted rectangle in a knit purl pattern. The pattern is FOURTEEN pages long. Why is the pattern 14 pages long? Because, instead of explaining the ten row repeat and then putting the shaping on top of that (e.g. decrease while continuing to knit in pattern), she writes out the entire ten row knit purl sequence every time something changes. Additionally, most of the time she starts with even number being the right side and wrong numbers being the right side,which is just plain odd. It's confusing and it's like she wants to keep you looking at the pattern for every row, rathe than following the very intuitive stitch pattern, which I had memorised after one repeat.  The instructions for the band just say 'pick up x number of stitches'. No ratios, no acjnowledgement that different bits of the band have different ratios. Afte...
