This weekend I finished my final project for Bendigo - the Noosa Scarf. This means I've knit the Richmond Knitters jumper for our annual Knit-A-Long , and a hat, jumper, socks, and now this scarf for the Bendigo Project, which is an initiative launched last year by some Australian designers. Last year I didn't knit any of the patterns, this year I went wild with it!
Knitting this was pure joy. I bought the yarn (locally died merino possum) on our recent trip to Adelaide. I cast it on the same month as I bought it, which is always a fun time
It's the sort of knitting that uses just enough of my brain to keep it interesting. A little too complicated to knit when out and about, but just right when sitting at home on the rare quiet weekend or unfortunate sick day that has happened recently. I knit it to pattern - right down to using a merino possum wool! I went up a needle size because I think my yarn is just a tiny bit thicker than the pattern requests. Also 2.75 mm needles just seem a bit small for scarf knitting! This scarf starts with a provisional cast on, knit one side to the tip, pick up the provisional cast on and knit in the opposite direction. It makes for a charming pattern in the centre.
I did change the tips. In the original pattern it just comes to a rather jarring stop (this picture is from the designer)
I wanted a smoother end. I tried two different techniques - for the one on the left I moved the decrease lines. For the other one I just sort of knit the purls together and went with vibes.
I love the yarn. It's Circus Tonic Handmade Merino Possum Woollen Spun and it's so warm and light and fluffy. It dried so fast out when I was blocking it, because it is airy and beautiful. There is a group photo for the Bendigo Project on the Saturday of the show, so I will hopefully have photos of me, with other people dressed in the same knitwear, to share after the weekend.
