I don't do a formal "first read of the year" as many do, but on Saturday I started John Scalzi's The Kaiju Preservation Society. I was pretty chuffed when i scored an e-arc from Net-Galley and I was happy to be starting the year with some sci-fi. I must admit after a big night on Friday I didn't feel great on Saturday, and we just laid around on the couch reading all morning. this was the perfect book for that. It's written in a light way, although it has some serious themes. It was just a delightful book, with an extremely delightful cover.
Unfortunately I finished it on Sunday and then I started Maggie Smith's Hamnet, and I rather think I'm missing the point. Why make this a fictionalised story about Shakespeare? Why not just write historical fiction? Very confusing. Anyway, I'm about 60 percent through and just spent 15 minutes reading a birth scene and I can summarise what what has happened so far in the book in two paragraphs, and it's beautifully written but excruciating detailed and so, so wordy. Also, I don't really care what happens, so there is that. But it also has a beautiful cover.I'm knitting away on Leon's jumper - just the bottom of the body and the second sleeve to go. It's a pretty enjoyable knit - the cable is quite intuitive and easy to memorise. This pattern was from Kate Davies ten Years in the Making club from a couple of years ago. There is a new Kate Davies club starting this week, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what patterns she has designed, as well as armchair touristing through Scotland again.
And that's my week in reading and knitting. To read my all my book reviews, and to see everything I knit, you can find me on Ravelry as Sharondoubleknit and on GoodReads as Sharondblk.
I'm joining in with Kat from As Kat Knits for Unravelled Wednesday and Kat from the Bookdate for It's Monday, What Are You Reading. Thanks Kat and Kat for hosting these linkups.
It sounds like you were sad to finish your first book - I know the feeling. I'm sorry your next book isn't as enjoyable. Perhaps the following book will be a delight!
ReplyDeleteThat little jumper is the cutest! Though I'm a crocheter, I've long admired the way knit projects drape so beautifully!
