I'm not at all sure this is what she had in mind

My friend Tara has been (nicley) asked me to knit her a scarf for a while. She is, I think, knitworthy and has certainly spent enough time sitting around with me while I knit to deserve a project. I really wanted to knit her Stephen West’s Unicorn Parallelogram but she thought that was a bit much. Me too, that’s why I wanted to knit it for someone else! So, I sent her some options and she elected Romi Hill’s Thaleia . Two problems with this: it’s only a metre long and it’s quite wide. It’s the same construction as the scarf I recently knit for Elise , but wider. Just like for Elise’s it needs to be longer, and so is more than a one skein  project.  I didn’t have any more Wollmeise in the stash, and at the recent yarn sale I couldn’t find anything I wanted in the prescribed fingering weight yarn. So I bought laceweight and I’m going down a few needle sizes. I figure this will make it a bit narrower. So that’s all good.  The only issue is I think Tara is imagining a ...

A delayed gift giving

I actually finished Elise's winter scarf the better part of a month ago, but it never seemed to be the right time to give it to her. Either I was seeing her when we were out (in which case I was worried she wouldn't be comfortable with me taking photos) or we were hanging out in our trackies and ugg boots at home (in which case she wouldn't want me to take photos). So tonight, the last day of autumn, I decided to just do it. While we were out to dinner with 6 other people.Because that's a way to make someone feel comfortable with photos. I'm quite happy with how it came out, particularly with the length I added. I knit it to (I'm guessing) two meters and did 15 repeats, rather than the 10 called for in the chart. I think it really benefits from the extra length. I did actually take a boring, on the floor photo, to show how it looks, before I gifted it, although I think I prefer the paparazzi shots I took!

Win some, loose some

I finished the Romi Hill cowl and I love it. The yarn is squishy and has good stitch definition, the pattern was interesting but still simple and the finished cowl is very wearable, either wrapped twice around my neck for warmth, or just hanging down in a single loop like yarn jewellery.   Some of the people on the Romi Hill Ravelry board have been taking pictures of their cowls on their animals. I tried to make the cats wear it, but this was the best I could get. Tarragon didn't really enjoy it, even though I explained that it was all in the name of art. I had loads of the felted merino left over, so I decided to make a Norrie hat. I've had my eyes on this pattern for a very long time. It echoes the cowls pattern, in that it is stocking stitch with garter ridges and I thought it would look good in this yarn. Now, bear in mind it's meant to be a slouchy hat. Unfortunately it's a bit reminiscent of Jabba the hat .  I feel like I could...

It's be all white...

I cast on the Romi Hill Cowl on Sunday. I'm very excited about knitting a cowl, and about playing along with Seven Small Shawls. I'm super excited about the pattern, which uses a stitch I have not used before. I'm pretty excited about the yarn, which is a felted merino singles. In WHITE. I have only knitted in white once before - a baby jumper that was white by request. I have a certain lifestyle, that makes my dentist shudder. I drink coffee, tea and red wine. I eat chocolate, often while I am knitting. I have a large amount of fear for this cowl, both during the knitting process and while wearing it after it's finished.     Still, I'm very much enjoying the process of knitting it, and hopefully I will get a reasonable amount of wear out of it, before the likely collision of scarf with something that isn't white.

Tidying up

I've been very busy the last week, getting the gift knits finished and the WIPs under control. At one point I had 5 things on the needles. I think that might be a record for me. I finished my father's socks. They are not as matchy as I normally try for but the grey on grey pattern was almost impossible to tell where the beginning of the pattern repeat is. After I finished the gift knitting I picked Taygete up again. I put it down at the beginning of the cast off on knit night 2 Mondays ago and picked it up this Monday to finish the cast off. The picot cast off was time consuming, but worth it now it is finished and blocked. I'm going to get pictures of it being worn tomorrow. I bought 7 dresses last weekend, because I'm sick of feeling like I don't have any summer clothes and I think this will really be wearable with them, for when I go into airconditioned places. For some reasons the new trams are airconditioned to about 18 degrees which is actua...
