After finishing Cloud Cuckoo Land (review here, I LOVED it) I've been struggling through a review copy of the romance Was It Good For You? The premise of this book is strong, challenging the idea that attractive men should be a certain kind of alpha male, and forcing our heroine to look twice at someone she discounted initially. And I'm into that - I'm married to a kind and gentle man and always dated nice men. The problem is that a nice (if a bit of a hot mess) woman and a nice, quiet man getting together does not an interesting story make. This book has pages of very pleasant text exchanges when they are making plans and making each other smile. Sweet? Yes. Interesting, no.
I'm backing it up with another romance with a cartoon cover on audio, Unorthodox Love by Heidi Shertok. I initially requested this one as an eye-read from NetGalley and was denied, so when it came up as an audio book I requested it. It's a romance set in the orthodox Jewish community of Minnesota, which is an interesting place to set it (see, it's already winning over the single ladies in London of the previous book). I'm not too far into, and the narrator might not be too familiar with the vernacular (she's mispronounced yarmulke, chametz and challah already) but so far, so good. Especially since the main character Penina has a job, hobbies and more than one friend!I'm been knitting away on the front bands of my Rainbow Party Cardi. They are so pretty and squishy and delightful to knit. I think I'll have it finished by the end of the week, and then it's on to CABLES!
And that's my week in reading and knitting.
To read my all my book reviews, and to see everything I knit, you can find me on Ravelry as Sharondoubleknit and on GoodReads as Sharondblk.
I'm joining in with Kat from As Kat Knits for Unravelled Wednesday and Kat from the Bookdate for It's Monday, What Are You Reading. Thanks Kat and Kat for hosting these linkups.
Those are fun covers on both of the books. Hope you continue to enjoy the current one even if the narrator is mispronouncing words. I'm surprised that didn't get that fixed before it was released. A narrator sure can make or break an audio book.
ReplyDeleteI hope you continue to enjoy Unorthodox Love. As a Minnesotan I can attest that we do have a small Jewish population in the state though it is greatly outnumbered by the number of Scandinavians here. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I'm in the mood to just hang out with fun characters, no plot required. I think Nora Roberts Brides Quartet is an example of that.
