My balcony is currently being rendered and painted, which means that they have wrapped the windows in plastic, and we can only open the bedroom windows, not the living room or study windows. It will be done in a couple of weeks, and meanwhile I'm practicing gratitude. I am grateful to have a safe, comfortable house, and the resources to do these necessary building repairs and still be able to afford boutique chocolates and yarn. Also, I'll be very grateful when they reinstall the heater and let me on my balcony!
At least I have the dual comforts of knitting and reading:
In reading this week, I'm reading the last of my NetGalley requests, (Im)perfectly Happy by Sharina Harris. It's a book about four black women, who are friends from college. Now in their early 30s, they have made compromises, and are seeking to follow their dreams. It's a great concept, but there are some weaknesses.
It's told in alternating first person chapters. With four main characters it might have been better to write it in third person. The romantic relationships are starting to annoy me - they lie, jump to conclusions, fail to communicate, are petty. I guess it's to give them something to resolve, but it's annoying. Also, as someone who works a job for the money, not the dream, I sometimes feel like giving up your dreams for a salary is just the way of it. But then I never had a dream, and use the money from my job to fund my fulfilling life outside work, so what do I know?
I'm listening to Russell Brand's Revolution, and liking it a lot more than I thought I would. It's ranty and funny and very far from a fully formed political discourse, but enjoyable. I don't think this is going to change anyone's political point of view, but since I already agree that the only way to get climate, racial and economic justice is to tear down the system, listening to Russell say this in his inimitable way is quite enjoyable.
And I'm knitting socks for Leon. The pattern is Sou'wester socks, by Rachel Coopey, and they have some of my favourite features: top down, heel flap and gusset, lots of easy to follow patterning and they are mirrored. Really fun. Just a couple more days to go on them, so I had better start swatching for my next project.
And that's what's been happening for me in renovations, reading and knitting this week. I'm joining in with Kat and the rest of the Unravellers, over at As Kat Knits.

Hope the work on your balcony goes to plan and is finished soon. Nearly there with the socks! I am terrible with socks; I always leave the second one for ages!
ReplyDeleteImperfectly happy sounds like an interesting book. I don't like reading much about those traits either, lying and petty behavior. Hope you enjoy the reading as you go on. Those socks look like they will be very comfy to wear and I like the detail at the top. Just commented on your older post and catching up with your newest now haha
